School Health - Clinic News

Hello, my name is Lorna Swingle and this is my fifth year at Mt. View. I have four kids who attend PWCS and I am an active member in our areas' youth sports community. I have a background in pediatric nursing as well as newborn and NICU. I love being with the kids and I really enjoy seeing them and joking around with them every day.  Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns about your child's health.

The PWCS school nurse program is designed to promote child and adolescent health and reduce health-related risk behaviors. The program is comprised of school nurses, a school health services coordinator, and a medical consultant. The role of the school nurse is to support student learning which is accomplished by implementing strategies that promote student and staff health. The school nurse provides health services, health education, staff wellness, promotes physical education and activity, and promotes community involvement. The school nurse also identifies health and safety concerns in the school environment and works collaboratively with staff, students and families in addressing these concerns.

Blue Placemat Use in Cafeteria
Our blue placemat policy in the cafeteria was created at Mountain View two years ago in order to ensure safety and awareness for all of our students with food allergies.  It is not specifically for students with peanut allergies.  If we have a health treatment plan on file for a student whose allergies require the use of an epi-pen or other medication, the student is seated at the end of the table with a blue placemat.  This allows our cafeteria hostesses to keep a closer eye on them.  The students with placemats are not isolated from classmates; they are at the same table but they are separated from children who may have peanut butter or other foods that may cause an allergic reaction.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the school nurse.

Immunization Information
State Announces New Immunization Requirements for Virginia Students

In State’s Superintendent’s Memo No. 049-10, the Virginia Department of Education announced that students attending Virginia public schools have the following four new immunization requirements and/or changes for the 2010–11 school year:

• A second dose of varicella vaccine is required before entering kindergarten.
• A second dose of mumps vaccine is required before entering kindergarten.
• Four doses of polio vaccine are required, with one dose being administered after age four, for all children enrolling in school (K–12).
• Four doses of DTaP vaccine are required, with one dose being administered after age four, for all children enrolling in school (K–12).

Parents are responsible for providing documentation that all required immunizations are up-to-date, completed, or that a medical or religious exemption has been obtained. Immunization requirements for a child to enroll or attend public school in Virginia are outlined in the Virginia Department of Health’s School & Day Care Minimum Immunization Requirements.

Health Treatment Plans
If your child has a special health condition that the school needs to be aware of, please have your physician fill out a Health Treatment Plan.  These forms can be picked up in the nurse's office or downloaded from the health documents links below.  The nurse and staff at Mt. View Elementary follow the directions stated in the plan to provide your child with the safest and most appropriate medical care to satisfy his/her specific health needs.

Please also remember that in order for your child to receive medication at school, there must be an appropriate medication authorization form filled out for both prescription and over the counter medications.  Any medication must be dropped off by the parent in an unopened container and all medication will be kept in the clinic.
TDap Boosters for 6th Grade!!
According to the Prince William County Schools’ regulation #755-1, all students entering the 6th grade must have a Tdap booster before entering middle school in September. This requirement applies to all students that are 11years old and if at least five years have passed since receiving the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.  Please do not wait until next summer...if your child has already turned 11, please bring him/her to receive the Tdap booster.

If your child has already received the booster, please send me a copy of the record so it can be added to your child’s file.  Please be advised that students will not be allowed to enter middle school without documentation of this immunization.
School exclusion citeria:
Please remember that according to the PWCS regulation #758-1, children must remain home from school for at least 24 hours if they have a fever of 100.0 degrees or higher and for 24 hours after an episode of vomitting or diarrhea.  If your child has strep throat, he/she must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.  By complying with this regulation, this will help us maintain a healthier environment for everyone at school.  We want to assure you that the entire building is being cleaned by our custodial staff on a regular basis with a school approved disinfectant.

Clinic Information
Parents will be notified if a child is seen frequently in the clinic with minor complaints of illness or injury that tend to be chronic and keep the student out of class.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep our children healthy. We all want to minimize the number of days that your children miss school and provide a healthy environment conducive to learning.
